Choosing Burr Geometry

Burr geometry is one of the main influences on particle-size distribution and the balance of clarity, body and texture in the cup. Espresso-focused geometries are designed around the fine grind sizes used for espresso and may favour body and texture. Brew-focused geometries generally aim to promote clarity at coarser filter settings, while multipurpose burrs provide greater flexibility for users who switch between espresso and filter brewing.

Burr Coatings and Durability

Coatings such as Red Titanium and DLC are primarily intended to improve surface hardness and resistance to wear. A coating does not change the burr’s underlying cutting geometry, which generally has the greater influence on grind distribution and cup characteristics.
