DF54 & DF64 Gen 2 Zero Point Explained: How to Find Your Grinder's True Zero

The zero point is the position where a grinder's upper and lower burrs first begin to make contact. It provides a reference point at the fine end of the grinder's usable adjustment range, it isn't a setting you normally grind at.

The important distinction is that the "0" printed on your grinder's adjustment dial doesn't always correspond exactly with its true zero point.

One DF54 or DF64 Gen 2 might reach initial burr contact close to the printed 0, while another may reach it slightly before or after that mark. This alone doesn't indicate a problem with the grinder.

Understanding where true zero lies can help you interpret grind settings, compare your grinder with someone else's, check reassembly after cleaning, change burrs and troubleshoot unexpectedly fine or coarse settings.

What Does "Zero Point" Mean?

It helps to separate three different reference points:

  • Zero point / true zero — where the burrs first begin to make contact.
  • Printed zero — the 0 marking shown on the grinder's numbered scale.
  • Your grind setting — the position you actually use to grind a particular coffee.

These don't have to coincide.

Zero is a calibration reference, not an espresso setting.

You shouldn't intentionally grind coffee with the burrs touching. When finding true zero, you're only identifying the first indication of light burr contact before moving the adjustment slightly coarser again.

Why Does the Zero Point Matter?

The numbers on a DF54 or DF64 Gen 2 are reference points rather than universal measurements.

If your grinder reaches true zero in a slightly different position from someone else's, the same displayed number won't represent exactly the same position relative to burr contact.

If you've removed and reinstalled the adjustment collar or upper burr carrier, checking whether the grinder returns to approximately its previous zero point can be a useful indication that it has been reassembled consistently.

A large and unexpected change in true zero after disassembly is worth investigating rather than simply accepting a new reference point.

After changing burrs

Replacing the burrs can change where true zero lies and therefore shift the dial positions you normally use.

Is It Normal If True Zero Isn't at "0"?

Yes. A modest difference between the displayed 0 and the point of initial burr contact can be normal.

The numbered scale is a reference system. The grinder doesn't inherently perform worse because true zero occurs a few markings before or after the printed zero.

Once you know where true zero lies, you have a consistent mechanical reference for interpreting the rest of the adjustment range.

Zero point is not the same as burr alignment

A zero point that doesn't line up with the printed zero is not evidence of poor burr alignment by itself.

These are two different concepts:

  • Zero point describes where the burrs first begin to touch.
  • Burr alignment describes how evenly the burr faces are positioned relative to one another.

The first point of contact tells you where the closest portions of the burrs begin to meet. It doesn't tell you whether the burrs are perfectly aligned around their entire circumference.

Likewise, repositioning a dial or reference indicator so that it displays 0 at burr touch doesn't physically realign the burrs — it only changes the displayed reference.

How to Find the Zero Point on a DF54 or DF64 Gen 2

You don't need to force the burrs together to establish true zero. You're only looking for the first point of light burr contact.

Before you begin

  • Make sure there are no coffee beans in the grinder.
  • Clear any loose residual grounds as far as practical.
  • Start at a setting comfortably coarser than the expected zero point.
  • Never force the adjustment collar.

Finding burr contact

  1. Run the grinder empty.
  2. Slowly adjust finer, moving only a small amount at a time as you approach the fine end of the range.
  3. Listen carefully as you approach true zero.
  4. Listen for a very light metallic chirp or rubbing sound that appears consistently at the same adjustment point.
  5. Stop adjusting finer as soon as you've identified the point of initial burr contact.
  6. Move the adjustment slightly coarser again.

A stray coffee particle can occasionally produce a similar brief sound. If a noise occurs only once and doesn't return at the same dial position, it may simply be residual coffee rather than the burrs touching. A sound that appears consistently as you return to the same fine position is a stronger indication that you've found true zero.

Important: Finding zero means identifying the first point of light burr contact. It does not mean tightening the burrs firmly together. Stop as soon as contact is identified and move the grinder slightly coarser.

That first repeatable point of light contact is your true zero reference.

Do I Need to Recalibrate My DF54 or DF64 Gen 2?

Not simply because true zero doesn't correspond exactly with the printed 0.

Finding true zero establishes the mechanical reference point. Physically changing the displayed zero reference is a separate step and often isn't required.

DF54

On the standard DF54, the factory indicator is fixed rather than designed as a user-adjustable zero pointer.

If true zero doesn't correspond exactly with the displayed 0, there is usually no need to alter the grinder mechanically. Simply note where true zero lies and interpret your grind settings relative to that point.

For example, if burr contact occurs approximately four tick marks finer than the printed 0, you can simply remember that offset when interpreting your normal settings.

The displayed number itself doesn't determine grind quality.

DF64 Gen 2

On the DF64 Gen 2, the displayed scale can be re-referenced so that it corresponds more closely with true zero. The exact method can vary with the grinder's hardware and dial configuration.

This isn't required for the grinder to work correctly. If you know where true zero lies, simply accounting for the offset is enough.

If you choose to recalibrate the displayed zero, use instructions appropriate to your particular DF64 Gen 2 revision rather than assuming every version uses exactly the same dial arrangement.

What If the Zero Point Changes After Cleaning?

A small change in the apparent zero point can occur after the grinder has been disassembled and reassembled.

A large or unexpected change deserves investigation.

Check that:

  • the upper burr carrier is fully seated;
  • the carrier has been returned to its correct orientation or original position where applicable;
  • the adjustment collar has threaded on correctly;
  • there are no grounds or debris trapped around mating surfaces;
  • the threads are clean; and
  • there is no unusual resistance when turning the adjustment collar.

Never force the adjustment collar simply because you expect the dial to return to a particular number.

If it doesn't thread smoothly or something feels wrong, stop and inspect the reassembly rather than applying additional force.

What If I Can't Grind Fine Enough for Espresso?

If your grinder appears unable to grind fine enough, don't immediately assume there's a mechanical fault.

First check:

  1. Where is true zero?
    Establish the actual point of initial burr contact rather than relying only on the printed scale.
  2. How far is your espresso setting from true zero?
    A low displayed number doesn't automatically mean you're unusually close to burr contact.
  3. Has the grinder recently been opened?
    If so, check that the burr carrier and adjustment collar have been reinstalled correctly.
  4. Have the burrs been changed?
    Different burrs can alter both the zero point and the dial position required for espresso.
  5. Have your brewing variables changed?
    Coffee, roast level, freshness, dose, basket and recipe can all substantially affect the grind setting required.

Compare Results, Not Numbers

If one person makes espresso at 12 and another uses 20, it doesn't mean either grinder is incorrectly calibrated.

Settings can vary because of:

  • true zero point;
  • burr alignment and burr geometry;
  • burr seasoning;
  • coffee and roast level;
  • freshness;
  • dose and basket;
  • espresso machine; and
  • the recipe being used.

Someone else's setting can be a useful starting point, but it isn't a target your grinder needs to match.

Compare the coffee you produce, not the number on the dial.

Should I check the zero point after cleaning?

Routine cleaning that doesn't involve removing the upper burr carrier doesn't normally require a zero-point check.

If you've removed and reinstalled the upper burr carrier or adjustment collar, checking true zero afterwards can be useful. A large change from its previous position should prompt you to check the reassembly.

Can I adjust slightly past the printed "0"?

Potentially, if your grinder's true zero lies slightly past the printed 0.

For example, if initial burr contact occurs four tick marks finer than the printed zero, a position one tick mark past 0 is still three tick marks coarser than true zero.

What matters is the position relative to actual burr contact, not the printed number alone.

If you haven't established your grinder's true zero, however, don't assume it's safe to continue adjusting beyond the printed 0. Approach the fine end only when deliberately and carefully checking true zero, and stop as soon as initial burr contact is identified.

Never deliberately operate the grinder at or finer than true zero, where the burrs are in contact.
